Multiplying Multi-Digit Numbers & Spelling Bee Info

We have begun learning how to multiply 2 and 3 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. We are learning both paper and pencil, and mental math strategies. To reinforce these concepts at home, please consider trying one (or more!) of the following activities.

- Your child can create and solve original two- or three-digit by one-digit multiplication questions using quantities encountered in daily life, such as prices in advertising flyers or catalogues, or information from newspapers, reference books, and websites. (For example: A milk jug holds 4L. Our family drinks 2 milk jugs in one week. How much milk do we drink in one year?). Dice can also be used to generate numbers for problems. Your child can explain to you the method used to calculate the product.

- Your child can find household items in the form of an array, such as game boards or a tiled floor. The child can draw the array on grid paper, record the multiplication sentence for calculating the number of squares, and figure out the product.

- Your child can collect data about how many minutes are taken up by various activities that happen regularly (e.g., combing hai.r, walking to school, playing games), and then calculate how much time is spent on the activity in one week (e.g., 20 min X 5 days = 100 minutes walking to school in one week).
